About Food For Thought
I made these pictures just before and during the time Jack and I were leaving the the city for what we thought would be a last adventure and also a calmer, healthier life in the country. Having AIDS at a time when medicine offered no cure or helpful treatment, we had decided at least to do what we could to live healthy lives. Studying and practicing Macrobiotics was part of the original plan which, for me, came out of a long held suspicion that what I ate was having a major effect on how I felt, on my health, both in body and mind. Many of the foods we started eating were new to me, or were foods I had a new focus on. And, so naturally I started to photograph them. Later I realized that balance, an element that had found its way into these photographs, was not only central to how we were thinking about eating but to the other aspects of our lives we were busy rearranging.
